Battle of the snakes

It’s apparently a snake-eat-snake world in my yard. I stumbled upon this tangle of snakes recently and it turned out to be a milk snake eating a garter snake. The milk snake took at least two hours to consume his fellow reptile. That was the amount of time snake1that passed from when I first found them tangled up until I went back and found the milk snake sitting there with a bit of garter dangling from his mouth.snake2

Milk snakes, by the way, got their name from their penchant for hanging out in barns.

This little guy showed all the aggressive traits of his larger brethren, vibrating his tail and lunging at my phone when I went to get a photo. Both snakes were pretty small, probably no more than a foot in length and thin.
